Cedar Creek Waterfalls in the Shawnee National Forest
Chasing waterfalls at Cedar Creek in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. This is a rugged and sloppy trail when wet but if you don't mind, it'll take you to tons of great waterfalls, cascades, and all sorts of neat gems. I've created a free guide for the area at: www.hikingwithshawn.com/hiking-with-shawns-trail-guide-series-cedar-creek-wonders/

Abandoned Beach in the Shawnee National Forest

The old beach at Johnson Creek Recreation Area in the Shawnee National Forest. This path is less than a mile long and would be perfect for those in wheelchairs or with limited mobility. The area is still good for picnics and boat and kayak launches. #shawneenationalforest #southernillinois #abandonedplaces Join my FREE Newsletter for a FREE Gift: www.hikingwithshawn.com/newsletter/ Shop Officia...

Godwin West to Hutchins Creek in Clear Springs Wilderness
That would be very welcome today! 😆 🤣
so pretty!
I’d have to be in the mood to do that trail by foot or find someone with a horse to take me. Lol
I'm going soon with my dad and we don't know where to go so thanks
Is this southern illinois?
Camp on what fucking rocks
Only in the winter, no snakes then
If it wasn't an Ecological area i would
100% I would camp there. If permissible of course.
You got me wondering where that one's at.
No trees to hang on and a bit sandy/rocky to pitch a tent. May need to cowboy camp on a thick pad to camp there. But at least it'd be out of the rain. 😁

Wow. Thank you
Think I’ll go to sleep with this on repeat. So beautiful!
This is a super video! In Bolivia or Peru, most of them would have been sacrificed.
I’ve seen this advertised and I’d love to do it. I’ve been on two other zip lines. This one looks easier to take off from.
great video and thank you for sharing!! have a good day and week.
They allow cameras now?
It was a special event. But the next time I go, I’ll probably leave the camera at home and just enjoy it!
Oh, that'd be a blast! Horizontal repelling!
It was a lot of fun!
This was amazing! I did it about 6 years ago, and I felt like I was doing it again! Thank you sooo much for sharing!!!
You're so welcome!
Looks like a lot of fun!
It was!!
40mph! Imagine if you got it up to 88. 😅 I think the 1st time, I'd be a little scared til i got a feel for it. About how many feet up were you midway on a run? I saw there's a zipline over the Red River Gorge, several hundred feet up...that would be spooky.
If I went that fast, my denture would probably fly out 😂
@@HikingWithShawn Fixadent and forget it. 😉
Yup! Very cool!
Are those salt/mineral deposits?
Ice
Very pretty area. Saw this on the Illinois Botanizer
It sure is
Agreed with Jeffrey, just finished a 5 mile run in 92 degrees, would love to sit in there and cool down
Always a good place to cool off!!
That does look cool. After having to change a flat tire this morning in 90 degree heat I think I would jump right in and cool down.
Me too!!!!
At the 18:38 minute, was that a trail camera? Pretty awesome looking place. Thanks for the video.
No. Those are homemade bird houses for warblers. They're doing a study on them there.
I've only been there once but did not do the full hike because it was too hot and humid. On that first set of stepping stones I unknowingly stepped over three cottonmouths without seeing them. It wasn't until I turned around that I saw what I had done. Needless to say i stepped around them on the way back!
They're pretty calm critters. They might gape their mouths open but it takes a lot to get them to bite.
I used to go to that beach all the time. I witnessed it deteriorate. About 2002 and 2003, silt got mixed in with the sand and got worse every year. In 2004 it felt like walking in slime.
I bet that was pretty bad.
3:38 that user trail goes to another point on the lake that is opposite of a floating fishing dock
We saw that later
In what areas of SNF are bear precautions necessary? I've only begun to explore your the region (as an adult) & haven't been at an area with bear boxes before.
I'm sure he is joking but it does keep raccoons out
@@leslietaylor4458 Raccoons are crafty lil buggers 😂
We have no bears. But they use bear box containers probably because it's a standard among National Forest and raccoons are like our yogi bears of the forest
I grew up swimming there. The beach was below the loop with the shower houses in the middle. The path around to the left was the handicap access. They also had a doc over there as well as raised picnic platforms for them as well.
I bet that would had been cool to see. I remember camping somewhere over that way when I was a kid. The tent camp spots were in the woods, right by the lake. Where do you think I was? I can't find the place.
What a shame 😢! My SNF big double-sided map/guide dated 2002 lists a beach at Johnson Creek. As the other commenter said, it was probably in operation for a few years more before it finally fell victim to budget freezes around the time of the Great Recession. Seems like they shut down several of the smaller and less used areas around that time. Obviously it cost a lot of money to put in all that walkway and now all it leads to is a bunch of weeds and brushy shoreline. I guess it is still a nice accessible nature trail, but I doubt it is much used. Once maintenance is dropped it doesn't take long for nature to take over and bringing it back would cost almost as much as starting from scratch.
It is a shame. The Shawnee used to have a lot more and it needs that once again. We need more money, personnel, and activities in the Shawnee.
That beach was still opened and maintained in 2008 I’m guessing it was around then when they quit maintaining it. It had shower houses and a nice concession at one time.
Wish I could had seen it!
What trail was this off of? We didn't see hardly any running water in the Gardens of the gods loop this weekend.
Wilderness trail after a few days of rain.
